The critically acclaimed Revolution in Colour tells the story of Ireland’s journey to independence from the early 1900s through to the end of the Irish Civil War (c. 1923). It uses archival newsreel and photographs, which have been meticulously colourised and restored, to bring to life the people, events, and atmosphere of the revolutionary period.

Historians and commentators argue that showing these events in colour helps bridge the emotional and psychological distance between us and that period, making familiar scenes feel more connected and human. Why not decide for yourself.

The documentary film is now available to VIEW FOR FREE on British Pathé’s YouTube channel. We hope you enjoy it.

Irish Drama, Screenplay

I recently shared the news that my script ‘See you in the Spring’ was a ‘Second Rounder’ at the Austin Film Festival, which I was chuffed with. A couple of days ago I got some reader’s comments and to say I’m smiling from cheek to cheek is an understatement.

‘The writer juggles many different topics – losing family members, sectarian divisions, changing times and technologies – skilfully, and does so with an authentic, natural style.’

If there are any producers/directors looking for a ‘warm and touching drama’ then you know where to find it. 😁

It’s been a long time since I posted on the website. A lot has changed over the intervening period, but one thing hasn’t, my need to tell a story. I’ve written a few screenplays over the years and this year I submitted ‘See you in the spring’ to the Austin Film Festival.

I was informed by the festival recently that my script was a Second Rounder.

We are pleased to inform you that your script advanced to the Second Round in the Drama Feature category ! Though it did not advance to the Semifinalist Round, please keep in mind that your placement represents a distinction only achieved by approximately 20% of this year’s submissions.

It’s great to hear that I have some storytelling ability, and this Second Rounder happens to be my second such award for a screenplay. Best of luck to all those who made it to the semi-final stage.

Austin Film Festival, Screenplay, The Gravedigger

‘The Gravedigger’, which I wrote with Gerard Murphy, the author of ‘The Kindness of Strangers’ upon which the screenplay is based, was entered into the 2020 Austin Film Festival drama screenplay competition. We got some welcome news that the screenplay got through to the Second Round. Alas, it didn’t go further. Nevertheless, according to the Austin Film Festival we should take a lot of encouragement from our achievement.

Thank you for submitting your work (The Gravedigger) into the 2020 Austin Film Festival Screenplay Competition. I am pleased to inform you that your script advanced to the Second Round! It did not advance to the Semifinalist Round but, keep in mind, your placement represents a distinction only achieved by less than 20% of this year’s submissions.

Out of 13,175 scripts submitted across all categories, this year’s entries proved to be incredibly competitive and featured a high standard of exemplary stories, including your own. This is a tremendous accomplishment, and you should be very proud of your script’s recognition.

AFF Offical Laurels

So if there is a brave Irish film producer out there looking to stir up a hornet’s nest then our story about an IRA murder squad that abducted and executed numerous people during the Irish War of Independence will fit the bill.

Dublin Zoo, Leo Oosterweghel, Mister Zoo

This is a teaser for a proposed film on Leo Oosterweghel, the now retired director of Dublin Zoo. As a young man he traveled extensively throughout the world to see animals in the wild, and these experiences inspired his vision for habitat design in a zoo setting and how to implement best practice in animal care. Along the way he witnessed the assassination of a president, the aftermath of the toppling of a dictator, and got caught up in a gun battle. The old adage that life is stranger than fiction certainly applies.

Artist, Mairead O'Byrne, Short Film, Where Shadows Drifted By

‘Where Shadows Drifted By’ is a short film on the painter Mairead O’Byrne that I filmed and edited to coincide with her recent exhibition at the Pearse Museum, Dublin. Mairead had a catastrophic accident to her right hand a few years back that could have ended her career. Determined to overcome the limitations her injury imposed on her she relearned how to paint and altered her style to accomodate her new reality. It is an inspiring story.
